March is Multiple Sclerosis Education and Awareness Month. To help support the movement, Family Care Personal Attendants LLC has made this guide to the common symptoms, causes, and treatments of multiple sclerosis (MS) to help you understand the condition better and help you prepare for next month.

MS is a potentially disabling disease that can affect the brain and spinal cord. This can cause a wide range of symptoms, including vision problems, arm or leg movement issues, and loss of sensation or balance. For most people, MS symptoms are unpredictable and can develop and worsen over time. However, for others, they may come and go.

Scientists have yet to understand the reason why MS develops. A few of the factors that have been suggested, according to the NHS, are:

  • Genetics
  • Lack of sunlight and vitamin D
  • Smoking
  • Teenage obesity
  • Viral infections
  • Sex (being female)

Unfortunately, there is no current cure for MS, but it’s possible to treat its symptoms with medication and other healthcare treatments.

MS treatments depend on the specific symptoms and challenges the person has.

It may include:

  • a 5-day course of steroid tablets taken at home
  • injections of steroid medicine given in hospital for 3 to 5 days
